Binaural Beats for ADHD
by Laney Haywood - PhD student at University of York
How do we maintain focus and productivity?
This is a challenge that’s amplified for individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world carries increased risk of stress, anxiety and depression.
While methods like medication and therapy offer support, new research conducted at the University of Sheffield in collaboration with Audicin sheds light on a unique and non-invasive self-care tool: Inaudible Binaural Beats.
Why are Audicin Binaural Beats different?
Binaural beats are an auditory illusion where two different tones are presented to each ear. As a result, the brain perceives a third tone, the binaural beat. Binaural beats influence brain activity, promoting relaxation, focus, and sleep depending on the frequency used.

Audicin has revolutionised this technology by incorporating inaudible binaural beats into soothing, purpose-driven, immersive soundscapes.
Unlike most binaural beat tracks you will find online, Audicin’s invisible binaural beats are:
Expertly engineered and mastered into 360 degree sound
Are composed by us using a scientific formula for optimised musical and nature sounds
Offering an enhanced listening experience and a more effective binaural beat delivery system for the brain.
Audicin binaural beats are designed to optimise output
The Research: Exploring Productivity in ADHD and Non-ADHD Groups
My research explored the effects of two binaural beats: theta beats (6Hz) and beta beats (20Hz). My study compared individuals with and without ADHD, examining task accuracy, reaction time, and heart rate.
Key Findings:
ADHD Participants:
Reacted faster to the task in beta, aligning with a greater decrease in heart rate, suggesting enhanced relaxation was the key to success.
Task accuracy improved in theta, but only slightly.
Non-ADHD Participants:
Higher work accuracy and faster reactions in theta, consistent with the proposed greater relaxation observed through heart rate measures.
The productivity of ADHD and non-ADHD users is optimized by different beats
For both groups, the binaural beat that induced relaxation enhanced productivity.
BUT - beta beats were more beneficial for ADHD participants, while theta worked better for Non-ADHD individuals.
Adapting to the Individual Matters
With ADHD diagnoses rising and long waiting times for professional support, accessible solutions like binaural beats can offer immediate benefits.
Audicin’s tailored songs, like "River’s Soul" (beta) and "Enchanted Forest" (theta), provide a practical self-care on the go tool for enhancing focus and managing daily tasks, particularly for individuals who might otherwise struggle.
Recommendations for Everyday Use
Consistency Is Key: Research shows that optimal brain entrainment can be achieved by listening for only 10 minutes. And that regular use is associated with consistent improvements in outcomes.
Match Your Needs with the Latest Research (from Audicin!):
ADHD individuals may benefit more from beta beats for tasks requiring quick reactions. However, for general productivity, theta beats can increase relaxation, promoting greater focus on the task at hand.
All playlists and songs featured on Audicin include a description of the binaural beat, as well as the mood and ideal uses for each piece. Finding the right track has never been easier!
Pair with Relaxation: Use binaural beats in a relaxing, familiar environment to maximize effects. You can listen to Audicin wherever you can wear headphones, so you have no end of choices when and where to listen.
Our Audicin team favourite times to listen include while walking, decluttering, sorting out the (endless) inbox , cooling down from exercise, and during morning coffee.
Future Horizons
These findings are promising, and larger studies planned by Audicin that will seek to expand these results and explore the potential of other frequencies, like alpha. Enhanced methods, like heart rate variability (HRV) and neuroimaging techniques, will further validate the benefits of Audicin binaural beats.
